CONFERENCE RATIONALE
Euclid's Elements is the most important work in the premodern study of mathematics. As such, much attention was given in modern scholarship not only to its mathematical content but also to various aspects of its transmission and dissemination. Nonetheless no attempt has hitherto been made to portray, on the basis of the accumulated body of research, a wide-scale narrative or narratives of the reception of the Elements. The primary objective of the conference is to make an important first step towards this end. By bringing together for the first time experts on the Elements and its reception in specific cultures and periods, the conference will foster a comparative examination of such issues as primary and secondary transmission, manuscripts and printed editions, The Elements in school and university curricula, commentaries and presentations in encyclopedias, other genres of transmission, influence on cultures and societies. The analysis of these issues will serve as the basis for a fresh and informed examination of future directions to the research of the Elements' reception.
