Historical Formations
of Spatial Knowledge

We invite applications for participation in a 5-day Advanced School for doctoral students and recent PhDs, to be held in the Israel Institute for Advanced Studies, Jerusalem. The School explores the formation and exchange of spatial knowledge in a global context, ca. 1000-1900, and will be guided by an international team of leading scholars in the field. Through site visits and critical, interdisci-plinary reading of textual and visual documents, including cosmographies, maps, city plans, travel narratives, and epics, the School aims to investigate the development of geographical concepts as a process conditioned by political, social, and cultural contexts. Over the week-long gathering, students will gain knowledge of a variety of subjects outside their immediate research topics, and become familiar with methodologies related to spatial history.

Themes and topics will include:
Spatiality, territoriality, and power; Movement
travel, description; Transmission of geographical knowledge; Cosmography as a genre and an idea; Maps as texts, maps as objects; Urbanism; Digital methods in spatial research.
We welcome applications from all suitably qualified candidates.
During the gathering, participants will be expected to present their current research in the format of a poster or a short talk.
