CEU’s English-language program in Jewish Studies is offered as a specialization within the MA programs of the Department of Historical Studies (M. A. Historical Studies, M. A. Museum Studies). Jewish Studies at CEU is a research-intensive program, allowing you to find your personal field of interest and to develop your skills with the advice of specialized faculty. We offer courses on the Jewish experience in the premodern, modern, and contemporary worlds.

Master-Specialization "Jewish Studies" (CEU Vienna)
CEU’s English-language program in Jewish Studies is offered as a specialization within the MA programs of the Department of Historical Studies (M. A. Historical Studies/One Year or /Two Year; M. A. Museum Studies/Two year). This unique combination allows you to anchor your learning and research in a specific field of Jewish studies while earning a US/EU-accredited MA degree in Historical Studies (https://www.ceu.edu/departments/historical-studies) or in Museum Studies (https://historicalstudies.ceu.edu/ma-museum-studies). Courses explore a broad range of historical periods, world regions, and methodologies approaching the past and the ways in which it shapes our present and future. The Jewish Studies Specialization will provide you with a Jewish prism through which to view European history.
Our Courses
Jewish Studies at CEU allows you to find your personal field of interest and to develop your skills with the advice of specialized faculty. We offer courses on the Jewish experience in the premodern, modern, and contemporary worlds, Jewish culture and heritage, religious, social and political movements, Jewish women’s and gendered experiences, migration and refugees, antisemitism and the Shoah, Zionism and other Jewish nationalisms, Israel and Palestine, Jewish identity and memory in a multicultural Europe, as well as many other topics. We also offer classes in Hebrew and Yiddish at the beginner and intermediate levels.
The CEU Jewish Studies Program will offer you opportunities to work in small study groups, be in regular conversation with faculty, participate in collective research projects, present your research at conferences, contribute articles to collective publications, and complete an internship at one of our partner institutions. CEU’s teaching in Jewish Studies includes public lectures and other extracurricular events on a broad variety of topics, including field trips across Central Europe and walking tours that explore Vienna’s Jewish past and present.

Graduates of CEU’s Jewish Studies Specialization have continued their studies at prestigious PhD programs in Europe, Israel and North America. Our alumni are now working at universities, in NGOs and Jewish associations, in museums and embassies, as film makers, in publishing, philanthropy, cultural heritage, and in many other exciting fields.
