The Salti Institute for Ladino Studies, Bar-Ilan University, Israel, 14–16 July 2026

Call for Papers

The Conference on Judeo-Spanish Studies is an international scholarly forum devoted to the study of the Judeo-Spanish (Ladino) language, literature, history, and culture. First held in Leeds in 1979, the conference will convene its 22nd edition at the Salti Institute for Ladino Studies at Bar-Ilan University, Israel, 14–16 July 2026.
We invite academic scholars, including graduate students (MA and PhD), to submit abstracts for original and unpublished 20-minute papers addressing the language, literature, history, and culture of the Sephardim after the Expulsion of 1492, from different disciplinary and interdisciplinary perspectives. The official languages of the conference are English, Spanish and Ladino.

Submission Guidelines: Abstracts (maximum 250 words), a short biographical note (maximum 200 words) and 3–5 keywords should be submitted in a single Word file to Instituto.Ladino@biu.ac.il by 22 February 2026. Please indicate “Congreso / Conference” and the author’s surname in the email subject line. Abstracts should include the title of the paper, author’s name, academic affiliation, academic status, language of presentation, and contact information. Graduate students should indicate the name of their supervisor. Notifications of acceptance will be sent by 15 March 2026.

Registration and Travel Subsidies: The conference registration fee is USD 100, payable upon notification of acceptance. Partial travel support of USD 200 will be available for up to five graduate students. Graduate students without other funding sources may request this support by including a brief explanatory statement in their submission email. Information on hotel options near the university will be provided in due course.

Venue: Bar-Ilan University (BIU), Israel’s second-largest research university, is located in Ramat Gan, approximately 10 km from Tel Aviv, with convenient access from Ben-Gurion International Airport. The conference will be hosted by the Salti Institute for Ladino Studies, which houses a unique Ladino research library with over 3,000 volumes devoted to Judeo-Spanish language and culture, as well as an important collection of rare Ladino printed books, manuscripts and periodicals. Participants wishing to organize a research visit before or after the conference are welcome to contact us.

Call for Papers (Convocatoria de ponencias)

El Congreso de Estudios Sefardíes es un foro académico internacional dedicado al estudio de la lengua, la literatura, la historia y la cultura del judeoespañol (ladino). Celebrado por primera vez en Leeds en 1979, el Congreso celebrará su vigésima segunda edición en el Instituto Salti para el Estudio del Ladino de la Universidad Bar-Ilan (Israel), del 14 al 16 de julio de 2026.

Se invita a investigadores, incluidos estudiantes de posgrado (máster y doctorado), a presentar resúmenes de ponencias originales e inéditas (20 minutos de duración) sobre la lengua, la literatura, la historia y la cultura de los sefardíes tras la Expulsión de 1492, desde diferentes perspectivas disciplinares e interdisciplinarias. Las lenguas oficiales del Congreso son inglés, español, y ladino.

Normas de Presentación: Los resúmenes (máximo 250 palabras), una nota biográfica (máximo 200 palabras) y entre 3 y 5 palabras clave se enviarán en un único archivo Word a Instituto.Ladino@biu.ac.il antes del 22 de febrero de 2026. En el asunto del email se ruega indicar «Congreso / Conference» y el apellido. Los resúmenes incluirán el título de la ponencia, nombre del autor/a, afiliación académica, situación académica, lengua de la presentación y datos de contacto. Los estudiantes de posgrado indicarán el nombre de su director/a de tesis. Las notificaciones de aceptación se enviarán antes del 15 de marzo de 2026.

Inscripción y ayudas de viaje: La cuota de inscripción será de 100 USD y se abonará tras la notificación de aceptación. Se concederán hasta cinco ayudas de viaje para estudiantes de posgrado, de 200 USD cada una. Los estudiantes de posgrado sin otras fuentes de financiación podrán solicitar esta ayuda adjuntando un breve texto explicativo en su correo de envío. La información sobre opciones de hoteles cercanos a la universidad se comunicará oportunamente.

Sede: La Universidad Bar-Ilan (BIU), la segunda universidad de investigación más grande de Israel, se encuentra en Ramat Gan, a unos 10 km de Tel Aviv, con fácil acceso desde el Aeropuerto Internacional Ben-Gurión. El Congreso se celebrará en el Instituto Salti para el Estudio del Ladino, que alberga una biblioteca especializada con más de 3.000 volúmenes dedicados a la lengua y la cultura judeoespañolas, así como una importante colección de libros raros, manuscritos y de prensa en ladino. Los participantes interesados en realizar una estancia de investigación antes o después del Congreso pueden ponerse en contacto con la organización del Congreso.
