Can Computers Create Meaning? A Bio-Cyber-Semiotic Perspective

Abstract: Ever since John Searle’s thought experiment “The Chinese Room,” many philosophers and even some computer scientists have claimed that computers only calculate and match patterns, with no understanding of what those data imply or mean. This talk presents a counter-argument that draws on biosemiotics to arrive at a more capacious sense of “meaning,” extending it beyond the human to nonhuman lifeforms and to intelligent machines such as programmable and networked computers. The implications include discussion of the urgent need to move away from anthropocentrism to a framework more conducive to empathy with other lifeforms and a less exploitive and damaging relationship to our planetary ecosystems.
