The 7th World Congress for Hallyu, which is to be held at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel, invites individual paper abstracts and panel proposals on “Transcultural Fandom – The Global Diffusion of Hallyu
”Transcultural fandom—the process where cultural practices and metaphors diffuse across geographical, ethnic, and linguistic boundaries to reach different fan communities—has been one of Hallyu’s most conspicuous characteristics ever since Korean popular culture has started going abroad on a massive scale in the mid-2000s. In fact, transcultural fandom is one of the major reasons for Hallyu’s rapid acceptance in places outside Korea’s immediate geographical, historical and cultural proximity, embraced by communities of fans in distant places as far as South America, Africa, Europe, and the Middle East. Hallyu fans usually do not see themselves as mere consumers of K-pop, Korean TV dramas, or movies, or as an isolated group of individuals, but as part of a wider transcultural network of people sharing similar cultural practices, passions and preferences.
This congress aims to rethink the cultural, economic, and political roles of transcultural fandom in the circulation of popular culture across multiple boundaries and more specifically to evaluate transcultural fandom as part of Hallyu’s global success.
