Logic and Metaphysics of the modern era
Details
Recent studies show that during the modern era the question of the statute of logic was the place of all the ontological confrontations. The attitudes were various: while Descartes distrusts the logic of his age, Leibniz rebuilds it with his De Arte Combinatoria and with his Characteristica Universalis; Arnauld and Nicole canonize it in the Logique de Port-Royal. Asking the question of the statute of logic means eo ipso, in the modern era, introducing the problem of its inscription in the metaphysics. Modern metaphysics is undoubtedly a science and logic – science of all sciences – includes the subject of its metaphysical basis. Far from being concluded, the debate on the relationships between logic and metaphysics, typical of the modern era, still provokes a great deal of controversy; a fact which demonstrates how this contemporary debate that finds its source in modern philosophy can be useful to reply to many questions raised by the complex relationship between logic and metaphysics. Are logic and metaphysics autonomous and independent from each other, or are they instead inherently linked? Is one of these prior to the other, did they appear at the same time? Where should we research the main nature of their assonance or discordance? Could logic teach us something about metaphysics or vice versa? These are questions that we intend to study in this conference, enlightened by modern philosophy.
This conference will take place from the 12th to the 14th November 2018, at the ULB and at the VUB. We invite whoever is interested in taking part of it to submit a lecture proposal (related to the topic of the conference) including a title, an abstract (minimum 300 words, maximum 500 words), 5 keywords summarizing it, and a resume to this address : logicmetaphysics2018@gmail.com. The deadline for submissions is the 15th April 2018. Lectures will be each 30 minutes long and will be followed by an 10 minutes talk. Lectures can be given either in english, french or dutch.
