ART HISTORY WITH(IN) CRISIS: “COMMUNOVIRUS” AND CLASS CONFLICT

New York City, February 10–13, 2021
Hilton New York Midtown

The CAA Annual Conference brings together over 4,500 art historians, artists, designers, and visual arts professionals in all stages of their careers. Each year we offer sessions selected by the CAA Council of Readers and the Annual Conference Committee, representing the vast scholarship and practice of CAA members.

Members submit proposals each year to be reviewed by the Annual Conference Committee Council of Readers. The Committee considers subject areas and themes that arise from proposals to present as broad and diverse a program as possible. The Committee selects approximately 250 sessions for each conference and must, at times, make difficult decisions on submissions of high merit. This means that on occasion, quality submissions may not be selected.

CAA schedules the conference program so that there are back-to-back sessions with similar content. However, given the number of sessions, this is not always possible.

All sessions are 90 minutes in length and are scheduled Wednesday, through Saturday of the conference in the following timeslots:

Jean-Luc Nancy appropriates the term “communovirus” to describe how isolation paradoxically creates a way of experiencing community—as the pithy #alonetogether reductively proclaims. In contrast, there are alarming developments amidst the COVID-19 crisis: the turbulence of state apparatus in managing the crisis and questionable assertions of states’ authority, an increase in domestic violence and the rising vulnerability of refugees in camps and the incarcerated. Sheltering in place is a secure option only for the reasonably affluent—divisions are starkly laid bare in such times as our lowest-paid workers are deemed “essential”. Such volatile conditions make many of us question: what roles and responsibilities do the visual arts shoulder as society undergoes such sudden and profound change? As educators, practitioners and curators of art and its social history, how can we contribute to the emergent forms shaping humanity’s understanding of community, both at local and global levels? Does art have the power to unite and connect in times of crisis, as Audrey Azoulay, the head of the UNESCO, proclaims? Papers in this session analyze art produced during periods of extreme societal rupture (such as war, famine, drought and illness) to reveal the necessity of creative expression in defiance of overwhelming hopelessness. Through a Marxist lens, presenters seek to understand parallels between art’s response to today’s pandemic and its precedent during prior episodes of collapse, both epidemiologically and economically.

Field of Study

The sessions listed below have been accepted by the Annual Conference Committee for CAA 2021 New York City, February 10-13.

As CAA announced July 16, we are now moving to a conference format that will include session content online, and are working diligently to provide a robust conference. This page does not include Complete Sessions and represents only a portion of the full conference content.

We invite you to search the abstracts and submit your presentation proposal directly to session Chairs during this annual Call for Participation (CFP).

Between August 12 – September 16 submitters send proposals directly to session Chair(s) via the email(s) listed below with the selected session abstract.

By September 23, Chairs have developed their sessions based on submissions and will invite and add accepted presenters to their session entry.

Upon acceptance, presenters must join or bring CAA memberships up to date, (you may apply with a non-member ID). Only members can be added to a Session.
