on the history of the Nazi murder of the sick and disabled in Eastern Europe and the consequences thereof, or on the Institute’s other focal areas relating to Eastern Europe. The position is funded for a period of 12 months and is aimed in particular at historians from Eastern Europe.
The objective is investigation within the context of the National Socialist policy of conquest and murder the European dimension of what the Nazis euphemistically referred to as »euthanasia«. Questions should address the fate of patients in countries invaded by Germany and the reactions of patients’ family members, the role of German occupiers and that of local officials, and if appropriate, also the relation of the murder of the sick to the systematic murder of Eastern European Jews. The manner in which crimes were dealt with in the context of the Cold War is of interest as well. The Fritz Bauer Institute also wishes to strengthen its network with Eastern European researchers through conception and implementation of a research project on the outlined subject area. A concrete written result is required at the end of the funded period in the form of a scholarly monograph. Public lectures at the Fritz Bauer Institute and regular periods of presence are expected. The position is financed by the Dorothee Freudenberg Fund and is made possible by a generous private gift of Dr. Dorothee Freudenberg.
