LOCATION: VIRTUALLY (ZOOM)
DATE: CONGRESS: MAY 16-19, 2022
The Canadian Association of African Studies (CAAS) extends a special invitation to all researchers and professionals working in the field of African Studies for its next annual conference to be held at the Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences, May 16-19, 2022.
The theme for the 2022 CAAS-Conference is “African Societies and Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Decolonization – EDID”. The conference theme aims to build on the focus of the 2021 conference on “Achieving Ubuntu: Redefining Equity, Partnership, and Social Change.” The ideal of community embodied in the African philosophy of Ubuntu—”I am what I am, because of who we all are”— can only be achieved through concrete actions and programs as they attempt to be embodied in current policies dealing with EDID. Indeed, the current context is strongly marked by the increased emergence of marginalized voices that are pushing for a critical analysis of institutional, cultural and societal practices, in Canada and internationally. For example, issues of anti-black racism, the place of First Nations, as well as the marginalization of visible minorities, and the need for the decolonization of institutions and knowledge, to name a few, are topics that require the attention of scholars and professionals in the field of African Studies.
The theme for our 2022 conference is conceived with the understanding that the issue of EDID is not experienced and addressed in the same way, nor with the same political and institutional tools, in Canada, internationally or in African societies and cultures. By focusing on these critical issues, we hope to stimulate deeper reflections in two ways:
