38th Annual Meeting of the Association for Israel Studies
Call for Papers
38th Annual Conference of the Association for Israel Studies
Israel: Conflicts and Mobility in a Diverse Society
Bar-Ilan University, Israel
June 27-29, 2022
The Program Committee of the 38th Annual Conference of the Association for Israel Studies invites scholars from around the world conducting research on any aspect of Israel Studies to submit proposals for organized panels and individual papers. Of special interest are proposals relating to the conference theme—Israel: Conflicts and Mobility in a Diverse Society.
The Conference will be hosted by Bar-Ilan University, an emerging center of dynamic, diverse, and effervescent academia in Israel, and will take place from Monday, June 27 to Wednesday, June 29, 2022, on the Bar-Ilan campus in Ramat Gan.
The conference aims to bring together international scholars from any discipline relevant to Israel Studies—including, but not limited to, Anthropology, Arab and Palestinian Society in Israel, Disability Studies, Economics and Business, Education, Ethnicities, Geography and Environment, History, International Relations, Language and Literature, Law, Media and Communication, Music, Visual and Performing Arts, Philosophy and Religious Thought, Politics, Sociology and Gender Studies. We particularly welcome papers and panels that focus on inner and outer conflicts in/of the diverse Israeli society, culture, politics, and history—mainly, but not limited to, matters of Women, Gender, and Sexualities; Minorities; Ethnicities—Jewish or non-Jewish (including refugees, labor immigrants, etc.); Israel in/and the Jewish World; or Israel in/and the Arab World. In addition to proposals that deal with groups, identities, and social networks and the often-conflicted relationships among them and with larger social configurations, we are also interested in studying areas of boundary-work, diffused borders, and mobility in and between those groups, identities, and social networks.
The conference is planned as an in-person meeting in the recently built northern campus in Ramat-Gan, but we will be closely monitoring the news and are prepared to switch to online mode if necessary.
We encourage applications from established and emerging scholars as well as graduate students working on all aspects of Israeli history, society, politics, and culture. Full panels are strongly encouraged, but individual papers may also be submitted.
The deadline for submitting proposals is January 18, 2022.
▪ Panel and paper submissions should be submitted using the online submission form at the AIS website (www.aisisraelstudies.org/conferences)
▪ Individual abstract proposals should not exceed 250 words.
▪ Panel proposals should include a chair, a panel abstract and 3-5 paper abstracts. Panel abstracts should not exceed 750 words. This year, the session submitter will receive a link to forward to each individual presenter so they submit their individual abstract directly into the system.
▪ In constructing panels keep in mind the importance of diversity in the AIS.
▪ Roundtable proposals should include a chair and 3-5 experts in the subject.
▪ All presenters will be required to register for the conference and be current AIS members in order to present and be listed on the conference program. Registration is online on the AIS website, beginning November 1 for AIS membership and March 1 for the Conference.
▪ Graduate students who have completed their course work are encouraged to submit their proposal and should provide the email of their advisor for approval.
▪ If you have any issues with the online form, kindly email us at ais@aisisraelstudies.org.
Travel Grants
The AIS will provide a limited number of grants to support conference participation of scholars without institutional travel support.
▪ All travel grant applications should be sent by email to Ilan Ben-Ami, AIS Treasurer, at: treasurer@aisisraelstudies.org.
▪ Graduate students who wish to apply for travel grants should send a request along with a copy of their proposal and a letter from their advisor.
▪ PhD holders without institutional travel support must include their abstract proposal and a current CV.
