NATO´s Maritime Strategies and Naval Operations since 1985
The Institute for Security Policy Kiel University (ISPK) and the Center for Military History and Social Sciences of the German Armed Forces (ZMSBw) are conducting a joint research project that seeks to address NATO’s Maritime Strategies and Allied Naval Operations of the past four decades. Two separate workshops will be hosted to bring together international experts on maritime strategy, naval operations, and allied seapower. We are looking for proposals from academics, think-tankers, policy-makers, and military officers, both senior and junior.
A proposal should consist of:
– Title
– Abstract of no more than 200 words
– Bio
We are looking for pieces that make both a conceptual and a policy contribution. They can reflect on the last round about 40 years, focus on present problems, or look ahead. Presentations should not be the reading of a paper aloud, if possible. We appreciate a presentation (20–30 minutes) rather than a read-out. Papers are planned to be distributed before the workshop to conference attendees. Please note that we plan to publish the papers as an edited volume in ISPK’s Seapower Series (Nomos: Baden-Baden).
Areas for contribution could include (but are not limited to):
– NATO strategies and their maritime/naval implications
– Development and application of ‘Alliance Maritime Strategy’ (2011)
– NATO maritime operational planning
– NATO tactical development and think tanks (Centers of Excellence, etc.)
– Technological developments, disruptions, naval modernization
– Bilateral and multilateral cooperation of NATO partners on all areas
– NATO maritime command structure and areas of responsibility
– Maritime implications of NATO expansion rounds
– NATO’s naval procurement
– NATO’s relationship to the European Union and the United Nations
