The Department of Contemporary History at the University of Vienna is a scientific institution for studies of Contemporary History. The Department is located at University Campus in the 9th district of Vienna. The current profile represents five equally relevant areas of research which reflect the restructuring since 2000 beyond Austro-centered history of political events and beyond national history – with a strong emphasis on methodological pluralism and research-baseed teaching. The areas of research are:
– Austrian Contemporary History as a history of the republic in international comparison to the present day
– Dictatorships, Violence and Genocide
– History of Science and Knowledge, Philosophy of Science
– Contemporary History of Gender Studies
– Visual Contemporary Culture, film and other media
With 17 academic members and seven members of administrative staff and other 17 historians assigned to the Department as well as distinguished visiting professors – such as the annual Sir Peter Ustinov Professorship – the Department represents a diverse and fruitful teaching area and research community.

Duration of employment: 6 year/s

Extent of Employment: 40 hours/week
Job grading in accordance with collective bargaining agreement: §48 VwGr. B1 lit. b (postdoc) with relevant work experience determining the assignment to a particular salary grade.

Areas of work:
– Participation in research and teaching with focus on the history of science and knowledge in European and global contexts
– Participation in administration
– Participation in research projects, especially in comparative contemporary history
– (International) publishing and presentation actitvities
– Project application and (external) fund raising
– Preparation /Finalization of a (publishable) habilitation
– Holding classes due to regulations of wage agreement
– Examination activities
– Support of students
– Participation in evaluation activities and in quality assurance
– Participation in administration of the institute/department

Profile:
Profile:
– Above-average PhD in the field of Modern or Contemporary History
– Research experience in the history of knowledge and/or history of science and in transnational history
– High command of written and oral language
– Very good knowledge of Englisch and at least one additional (Eastern) European language
– Computer literacy
– Abilitiy to work in teams
– Teaching experience, experience in e-learning
