The Faculty of Arts invites applications for the position of
ASSISTANT PROFESSOR / ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR / PROFESSOR IN ISLAMIC AND MIDDLE EASTERN STUDIES
The successful applicant may be appointed to a permanent professorship or a fixed-term associate/assistant professorship (tenure track system), depending on his or her qualifications and career stage.
The focus of Islamic studies is on the history of Islam, the religion itself and Islamic cultures and societies from the 7th century to the present. The appointee can be acquainted with either the historical or current forms of Islam. The geographical focus is on the Middle East (the MENA region). Familiarity with other regions central to Islam, the global manifestations of Islam or classical Arabic are considered an asset. The successful candidate is particularly expected to have a creative perspective on the development of the field.
The professor of Islamic and Middle Eastern studies will work within the overall context of African and Middle Eastern studies at the University of Helsinki.
