Expulsion, Exile and Destruction: Armenian and Jewish Perspectives (working title)
The European Centre for Jewish Music at Hanover University of Music, Drama and Media is pleased to announce its upcoming international multidisciplinary conference:
Expulsion, Exile and Destruction: Armenian and Jewish Perspectives (working title)
to be held from 24–27 February 2019 at the “Pavillon Kulturzentrum” in Hanover, Germany.
Not only were Jews and Armenians forced into statelessness and a life outside their homeland for centuries, they also shared another fate: in the 20th century, in the shadows of two world wars, they were threatened with collective annihilation. The European Centre for Jewish Music and the German-Armenian Society take this convergence as a starting point for a jointly organized conference, which will focus on the Jewish and Armenian historical experience of existence. The conference will not only consist of academic paper presentations, but also of a cultural program (concert, theatrical performance and podium discussion) reflecting the greater topic of the symposium.
This call is aimed at a wide variety of disciplines and fields of research (e.g. Ethno-/musicology, Jewish Studies, Armenian Studies, Cultural Studies, History, Political Science etc.). We are particularly keen to hear from young scholars at the doctoral and post-doctoral level. Papers with a focus on either the Jewish or the Armenian condition or from a comparative perspective are especially welcomed and will be integrated into the following conference panels:
- JEWISH-ARMENIAN PARALLELS
- DIASPORA – PAST AND PRESENT
- MINORITY ISSUES
- GENOCIDE AND HOLOCAUST
- TODAY – THE VIEW OF THE OTHER
Paper presentations should be about 20 minutes allowing 10 minutes for discussion. Conference papers and discussions should be in English if possible, but can also be in German.
Abstracts of about 300 words should be sent by 1 October 2018, to the following e-mail address: sarah.ross@hmtm-hannover.de
