Call for nominations
Through the “Geisteswissenschaften International” programme, the Fritz Thyssen Foundation, VG Wort, the Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels and the German Federal Foreign Office support the translation of works in the fields of the humanities and social sciences. The prize finances the cost of translating a given work into English or, in justified individual cases, into other languages.
The objective of the translation funding is to support wider international dissemination of the results of academic research carried out in Germany in the social sciences and humanities and at the same time, to uphold the German language as the language of first publications in the humanities and social sciences. The idea is to increase the number of licenses sold in the English-speaking world in a way that is sustainable. To this end, programme partners provide 600,000 Euros annually.
In consultation with a licensee publisher, German publishers can submit publications for translation funding from the fields of the humanities and social sciences that meet the prevailing academic standards.
