“Jewish and Arab Childhood in Israel”
and invite scholars to offer relevant manuscripts
Editors: Einat Baram Eshel, Wurud Jayusi, Eman Younis, Ilana Paul-Binyamin
About the book: The premise that “childhood” is a culturally related phenomenon has long been rooted in research in the field and in the educational discourse influenced by it. This proposed anthology results from an attempt to examine this assumption in practice and to elucidate the connections and ramifications that exist between the ideological, national, social, economic, and cultural phenomena and the characteristics of childhood in Jewish and Arab society in the State of Israel. We wish to channel our interest to two types of related issues: (1) The experience of the child as a subject within his/her family and community, in the educational systems, in leisure activities, and in social relations with their peer group; and (2) the images and perceptions of childhood in formal and informal institutions in both populations, as they are manifested in literature, film, art, and the media. Both issues evolve into what we believe is the underlying significance (and the social importance) of cross-cultural engagement within childhood: mapping and understanding childhood either from the vantage point that children are a valuable national resource and the invested future of the state, or by viewing them as individuals with universal status and rights. With this anthology, we wish to stimulate readers to think more deeply about the essence and status of childhood in both cultures. We target various aspects of this essence, such as the rights of children, institutional and public resources devoted to cultivating these rights, and more. We encourage any papers focusing on the topics and issues related above. More specifically, however, we are looking for papers that describe cross-cultural relations and connectivity (or lack thereof) between children of either populations, or comparing their mutual perceptions in each culture and the ways by which these are/were represented in literature, the arts, and the media. The book will be published in English by a major publishing company.
