Will There Always Be Gender Discrimination? (Cailin O’Connor)
Will There Always Be Gender Discrimination?
Lecture by Prof. Cailin O’Connor
Chair: Prof. Ehud Lamm
Fourth Annual Lecture in History and Philosophy of the Life Sciences
Gender inequality has been the rule across many cultures. Even in modern societies, it is often the case that women face discrimination, including pay and hiring discrimination. This talk explores how and why such patterns of inequality emerge in the first place, and what this emergence can tell us about hopes for equality. In particular, game theory and evolutionary game theory will be used to study the cultural evolution of conventions and norms surrounding household division of labor and bargaining across genders.
