The Recent Karlsruhe Ruling and the EU’s Future – Is the European Central Bank Still Independent?
Dear all,
Please join us for a webinar discussion on Thursday, June 4, at 16:30 on the topic of:
The Recent Karlsruhe Ruling and the EU’s Future – Is the European Central Bank Still Independent?
On May 5, Germany’s Constitutional Court ruled that both the European Central Bank (ECB) and the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) exceeded their mandates in their actions in recent years.
Does this ruling weaken the CJEU relative to national courts, challenging the EU’s legal and political order? Does it restrict the ability of the German central bank to participate in the common monetary policy? How does it affect the integrity of the euro area and the independence of the ECB?
These issues and more will be addressed by our guest speakers:
– Dr. Katarina Barley, Vice President of the European Parliament (S&D) and former Minister of Justice, Germany
– Prof. Erik Jones, Director of European and Eurasian Studies, School of Advanced International Studies, Johns Hopkins University
– Prof. Arie Reich, Faculty of Law, Bar-Ilan University
