Small RNA inheritance & scientific pluralism – On the role of theory in scientific controversy
Astract:
Scientific pluralism has become one of the most worked on topics within philosophy of science. There are numerous accounts of plurality within various research fields. Most philosophers of science seem to agree that plurality is beneficial for research fields. Notwithstanding the amount of literature on cases of plurality, there have been few attempts to understand how a particular research field fares if it displays plurality. Is plurality stabilizing or destabilizing? Do researchers agree that plurality is beneficial? In this talk, I set out to answer this question. I approach this influential topic within the philosophy of science, scientific pluralism, with social science methodology. Using interview data, I showcase the dynamics of one particular research field, small RNA inheritance, that displays plurality and provide a nuanced picture of the dynamics within the field. I consider how these empirical results should feedback on the scientific pluralism literature.
