The 49th Annual Meeting of SEASECS
February 16-18, 2023
Decatur, Georgia
“Legacies for the Future: Eighteenth-Century Studies for Our Times”
The only one of the original thirteen colonies to be established in the eighteenth century and the home of displaced Native Americans, Georgia is a land of legacies marking the past and shaping the future. Although slavery was originally illegal in the colony, Georgia became one of the seven original Confederate states and the last to be readmitted to the Union. However, the state also became a cradle of the Civil Rights movement and the birthplace of Martin Luther King, Jr. Present-day Georgia is also home to the world’s busiest airport and has become the Hollywood of the South.
To mark both the fiftieth anniversary of the ratification of SEASECS’s first constitution in November 1973 prior to the society’s first meeting in 1975 in the Peach State’s capital city, metropolitan Atlanta will be the venue for the 49th Annual Meeting of the society in Decatur, Georgia at the Decatur Conference Center attached to the Courtyard by Marriott Atlanta Decatur Downtown/Emory. We invite participants to reflect on the range and variety of the legacies of Georgia and elsewhere in the eighteenth century, as they shaped history and continue to influence our lives today.
