Associate Professor/Professor - J. Richard and Dorothy Shiff Chair in Jewish Studies
The Faculty of Arts and Sciences of the University of Toronto invites applications for a full-time tenure stream position in Jewish Studies. The appointment will be at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor, with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2024. The successful candidate will be appointed to a Faculty of Arts & Science Department depending on their field of expertise (51%), and the Anne Tanenbaum Centre of Jewish Studies (49%). The successful candidate is eligible to be named the J. Richard and Dorothy Shiff Chair in Jewish Studies for a five-year term, which will be renewable following a favorable review.
Candidates must hold a PhD in Jewish Studies or closely related field, with a clearly demonstrated record of excellence in research and teaching. The successful candidate will be a specialist in the study of Judaism or Jewish religious practices broadly defined, or someone specializing in medieval or modern Hebrew literature and culture. We seek candidates whose research and teaching interests complement our existing institutional strengths. Candidates will have an established international reputation and will be expected to sustain and lead innovative and independent research, and to maintain an outstanding, competitive, and externally funded research program in areas pertaining to Jewish Studies.
Candidates must provide evidence of research excellence which can be demonstrated by a record of sustained and important scholarly publications, including books and articles in top-ranked and field relevant journals, presentations at significant conferences, awards and accolades, and other noteworthy activities that contribute to the visibility and prominence of the discipline, a research statement as well as strong endorsements from referees.
The successful candidate is expected to strengthen the Faculty of Arts & Science’s undergraduate and graduate education in Jewish Studies. Evidence of excellence in teaching will be provided through teaching accomplishments, the teaching dossier submitted as part of the application (with required materials outlined below).

Salary and rank will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
