MECARC’s Annual International Conference The Middle East 2023: Constructing Identities In A Constantly (Re)Shaping Region
Will Be Held At Ariel University And At Its Tel-Aviv Branch, Israel May 16-18, 2023
Over the recent decade, the Middle East has undergone a formative period, during which it has experienced a myriad of ideational, political, and social shifts and developments. A core aspect of this series of transformations is the notion of collective identity (group identity, tribal identity, national and pan-national identity) and the way these have allowed the deepening complexity of regional architecture.
Rapidly shifting identities had also deeply influenced international players (e.g., the UN, the EU, the US and Russia), their perception of the region, and their interactions within its borders. To address these themes, MECARC hereby invites submissions to its Annual International. The conference will bring together Israeli and Global researchers with expertise in Middle Eastern Studies (including the Arabic language), Political Science and International Relations, Sociology, Law, and other relevant fields.
We encourage papers, posters, and organized panels related to one or more of the topics mentioned below:
• Identities in Sunna versus Shia
• Salafism
• Refugees in the MENA Region
• Human Rights and Minorities
• The International Relations of The Region between its Core Global Actors
Submission Guidelines
Papers and Posters:
- Abstracts are to be submitted in English to this email address: MECARC@ariel.ac.il
- Abstracts with not exceed 250 words and will include full author(s) affiliation and contact details.
- Applicants interested to compete for the conference’s best paper and/or best poster award must specify
their desire to do so in their submission.
Pre-Organized Panels:
- Proposed panels must include an abstract explaining the purpose and composition of the panel, as
well as a list of proposed panelists.
Deadline:
- All materials must be submitted by January 15, 2023.
- Members of MECARC whose papers have been accepted will be able to submit applications for
research and travel grants. - Registration for the conference is open for both members as well as non-members of MECARC.

Selected papers will be considered for publication in the following journals:
• JIMES (The Journal for Interdisciplinary Middle Eastern Studies)
• NRPS (The Journal of National Resilience, Politics, and Society)
