Call for Applications:
Master Class on Modern Talmudic Hermeneutics
December 12-14, 2023
Katholische Akademie Berlin
with Oded Schechter and Elchanan Reiner
Submission Date: 15.8.2023
The Berlin Center for Intellectual Diaspora invites graduate students and early-career scholars to submit applications to participate in a master class on modern talmudic hermeneutics, which will take place on December 12-14, 2023, at the Katholische Akademie Berlin. The organizers will take care of accommodation and will partly reimburse travel costs upon request.
The master class will be led by two main instructors through guided readings in primary sources. Elchanan Reiner (Tel Aviv University, emer.) will explore the rise of modern talmudic hermeneutics, among others due to the printing of the Talmud, and the reinforcement of the Talmud’s canonic status in the modern Jewish library. Oded Schechter (Makhloykes Berlin) will show how in modern talmudic study the aim of limud shifted from formulating general principles to elaborating unresolvable problems. Additional activities will include a class on Talmud in modern Jewish thought by Elad Lapidot, guest lectures, small group study sessions, open discussion and presentations of participants’ research projects.
Discussions will be held in English, basic reading proficiency in Hebrew will be an advantage. The program is explicitly open to researchers also in fields beyond rabbinics, and scholars in other areas of Jewish thought, philosophy, hermeneutics, literature, religion, history or culture are encouraged to apply.
Applications should include a short covering letter (max. 1 page) and a short CV (max. 2 pages) and be sent as one PDF by August 15, 2023, to Elad Lapidot at
elad.lapidot@univ-lille.fr
