Israel-Hamas: A colonial war?
Introduction: Sonia Boulos & Tamir Sorek
With: Michal Frenkel, Honaida Ghanim, Ian Lustick, Oren Yiftachel, Raef Zreik
The settler-colonial paradigm has gained traction in the study of Palestine/Israel in recent years. The current war in Gaza has prompted many academics to refer to coloniality as a framework to understand and contextualize the current wave of violence. Parallel to this, reference to settler-colonialism has triggered discursive resistance among some academic circles regarding its analytical value and political relevance. What do we gain and what do we lose by using it as a central scholarly lens for understanding the war? Could this paradigm co-exist with other perspectives (for example, a national conflict) in the same analytical frame, even today? If Zionism is a settler-colonial enterprise, what could we learn from the current war about the meaning of decolonization?
