 University Assistant (post doc) at the Department of East Asian Studies

The Department of East Asian Studies at the University of Vienna is primarily concerend withs ocial and cultural aspects of contemporary East Asia. We are looking for support in social science research and teaching on modern Japan to strengthen our research on rural wellbeing in Japan. The 20-hour/week position is limited to a four-year period.

Duration of employment: 4 year/s

Extent of Employment: 20 hours/week
Job grading in accordance with collective bargaining agreement: §48 VwGr. B1 lit. b (postdoc) with relevant work experience determining the assignment to a particular salary grade.

Job Description:
Active participation in research, teaching and administration, which involves:
– Developing and strengthening an independent research profile
– Involvement in the departmental research project
– International publications and presentations
– Responsibility for project applications and the acquisition of third-party funding
– Preparing a habilitation thesis
– Independent teaching of courses as defined by the collective agreement
– Supervision of students
– Involvement in the department administration as well as in teaching and research administration

Profile:
– Doctoral degree/PhD degree in Japanese Studies
– Professional and methodological competences to conduct social science research on Japan
– Excellent publication record
– Experiences in third-party funding acquisition
– Didactic competence in teaching small and large groups at all levels of the curriculum and using online teaching tools
– High ability to express yourself both orally and in writing
– Excellent command of written and spoken English
– IT user skills
– Ability of interdisciplinary cooperation and to work in a team

In addition, we expect the successful candidate to have
– Teaching experience in German, English and Japanese
– Experience of working on research projects
– Publications in renowned subject-relevant media
– International presentation experience
– Fieldwork experience
– Experience in mass media usage for the dissemination of academic knowledge

Desirable qualifications are
– Knowledge of university processes and structures
– Experience of supervising students
