קול קורא לסמינר פינס 2019
העמותה לזכרו של פרופ’ שלמה פינס ז”ל מזמינה, בפעם השלישית, מלומדים מחוץ לארץ להעביר סדנה אינטנסיבית לתלמידים.
ד”ר טוני סטריט (Dr. Tony Street) מאוניברסיטת קיימברידג’ והמכון ללימודים מתקדמים, יעביר השנה את הסדנה שתפתח בהרצאתו על אודות:
The Practice of Philosophy in Fallen Times: Glimpses of the Logical Practice of Abū l-Barakāt al-Baghdādī
ההרצאה והסמינר יתקיימו שניהם בשפה האנגלית.

הסדנה מיועדת לתלמידים מצטיינים לתואר שני ושלישי מכל האוניברסיטאות בארץ והיא פתוחה גם לתלמידים שלא למדו ערבית. עם זאת, תינתן עדיפות לתלמידים בעלי רקע זה.
הסדנה שתתקיים ב-1 וה-2 באפריל באקדמיה הלאומית הישראלית למדעים בירושלים תחל יום לאחר ההרצאה השנתית לזכרו של פרופ’ שלמה פינס ז”ל שתתקיים ב-13 במרץ אף היא באקדמיה הלאומית הישראלית למדעים.
ימי הסדנה כוללים ארוחות והמשתתפים שאינם מתגוררים בירושלים יזכו גם ללינה לשני לילות.
התלמידים נדרשים לנכוח בהרצאה לפני הקיום הסמינר, שכן היא מבוא לדיונים בו.

Abū’l-Barakāt Hibat Allāh ibn Malkā al-Baghdādī was a highly original philosopher and a well-known physician in his time, who flourished in Baghdād in the first half of the twelfth century. He was born to a Jewish family and converted to Islam towards the end of his life. His best-known work is Kitāb al-muʿtabar, in which he criticizes Peripatetic philosophy as set out by Ibn Sīnā and others; Another significant and well-known work of this important scholar is a philosophical commentary on Ecclesiastes that attests to his attention to Jewish texts and tradition.
The lecture will focus on two main subjects:
- The preface to the Kitāb al-Muʿtabar (first brought to scholarly attention by Shlomo Pines in the 1950s), the vision of the history of philosophy that it contains, and Abū l-Barakāt’s statements regarding how he will respond to this vision in his philosophical practice.
- Passages in the logical section where Abū l-Barakāt comments on existing deadlocks in the discipline; these interventions are then appraised, not in logical terms, but against what was claimed in the preface concerning Abū l-Barakāt’s philosophical practice.
The public lecture will be followed by a workshop, which will be open to selected students. The workshop will include five sections, beginning with a reassessment of Abū l-Barakāt’s impact on the development of Arabic logic. The four following sections will focus on material from Pointers and Reminders (al-Ishārāt wa-al-tanbīhāt by Avicenna) and the Epistle on Logic for Shams al-Dīn (al-Risālah al-shamsiyyah by Najm al-Dīn al-Kātibī). These sections provide an introduction to Arabic logic and a presentation of central theories in Arabic and Hebrew medieval logic (1: Predicables and Definition; 2: Propositions; 3: Syllogistic; 4: Science and Fallacy).
The workshop will be conducted by Dr. Tony Street (Faculty of Divinity, University of
Cambridge, currently a guest fellow at the Israel Institute of Advanced Studies). Dr. Street’s research focuses on the intellectual history of the Islamic world through the twelfth and thirteenth centuries CE, a period of fruitful tension between Aristotelian philosophy and the Islamic sciences. Above all, Dr. Street concentrates on the logical texts which developed through this period, and the reasons for their growing independence from the Aristotelian tradition. More broadly, he is interested in commentary traditions as vehicles for innovation, and the use of canon-formation to define cultural identity.
