New York Conference on Asian Studies
The conference theme for the NYCAS 2019 annual meeting is movement. Movement happens across many types of terrain: physical, social, temporal, ideological. As changes to the world’s economic, political, and ecological systems occur at an ever faster clip, movement reshapes both our physical and intellectual landscapes. For instance, internal and transnational migration, economic remittances, and desertification exist in the same landscape as the rise of populist nationalism, the growth of new religions, and the sharing of music and art on social media. Movement perennially forces us to rethink our relationship to the world. What role has Asia played in moving the world to where it is now, and how will it foster new ways of thinking and being in the future?
Example topics include, but are not limited to:
Movement as resistance and assimilation
Activism and political movements
Religious movements
Refugee crises
Economic migration
Tourism
Asian diasporas
Artistic, literary, and intellectual movements
Upward (and downward) mobility and class
High and popular culture
